Excessive voltage to chips on Creative controller?
 Writer : Alex

Hi,

The ATmega MCU and the ST232C chip found on the Creative A.4 controller here are both rated for up to 5.5V (ATmega is 1.8V to 5.5V, ST232C is 4.5V to 5.5V), or 6.0V "absolute maximum rating". As I understand, this means they may misbehave at above 5.5V, and may fail permanently at above 6.0V. Four brand new "1.5V" batteries typically deliver about 6.2V (1.55V each). Is this excessive voltage fed directly into these two chips? Isn't that a problem?

I don't see any voltage regulator on the board. Is there maybe one on the back of the board, thus hidden from view?

I'd appreciate any comments. (And it is really unfortunate that this forum looks abandoned.)

Alex
